Telehealth is a term for health care that you can get while being in a different physical location than your health care provider.
Getting abortion care via telehealth means you’ll get abortion pills mailed to you, or you might pick the pills up from a specific location.
The abortion pill is generally available earlier in pregnancy. Each provider will have their own rules about how far along in pregnancy they’ll offer it–some will offer it through around 14 weeks of pregnancy and others will stop offering it much earlier in pregnancy.## Can you get a telehealth abortion in all 50 states? Some telehealth abortion providers only serve specific states. Abortion Provider## Can you travel to get a telehealth abortion? It’s legal to travel to another state to get an abortion in person or via telehealth. Traveling to get a telehealth abortion may save you time and money because you may be able to go just across state lines into a state that has a telehealth abortion provider rather than traveling further to get to an in-person provider in that state.
Depending on the provider, in order to get your abortion pills, you may be required to either pick up the pills in person or have a mailing address in a state where the provider is licensed to practice. Some providers only let you pick up the pills from their in-person health centers, but others have multiple pickup locations.## What type of abortion care can you get via telehealth? There are two types of abortion:
The [abortion pill](/abortion-types/pill) (also called [medication abortion](/abortion-types/pill))

The [abortion procedure](/abortion-types/procedure) (also called [in-clinic abortion](/abortion-types/procedure)).
Which type you have will depend on a few different factors, including how far along in pregnancy you are, your location, what your preference is, and what the provider you choose offers. [We have more information about how to decide between these two types of abortion](/abortion-types/pill-vs-procedure-how-to-decide).
Every provider will have their own cutoff after which you won’t be able to get the abortion pill from them. Some providers’ cutoffs for the abortion pill are well before 14 weeks, and some may offer the pill through around 14 weeks.
Because the abortion procedure involves an actual physical procedure that a health care provider performs, the only type of abortion you can get via telehealth is the abortion pill. That means that if you are past the cutoff for the abortion pill, you won’t be able to get an abortion using telehealth.## How does telehealth abortion work? There are two kinds of telehealth abortion providers: those that only work via telehealth and don’t have any in-person services and those that offer both in-person and telehealth options to their patients.
Whether a telehealth provider also offers in-person services or not, getting a telehealth abortion involves the same basic steps:
1. **Find out if you’re eligible.** Each provider has its own rules about who is eligible for a telehealth abortion. You can call or check out each provider’s website to find out if you meet their criteria.
2. **Provide information on your medical history**. You’ll give some information about your health and pregnancy through a video visit, a phone call, or an online form.
3. **Learn about the process.** The provider will give you instructions on how and when to take the pills. They should also give you information about what to expect when you take the pills, what to do if you have side effects, and how to reach out if you have questions.
4. **Get your pills** There are two ways you can get your abortion pills when you get a telehealth abortion: by mail or by picking them up. Some providers may only offer pills by mail, and some providers may only offer pills by pickup. Some may offer both options. Some providers have multiple pickup locations.*
5. **Take your pills** The provider who prescribed them to you should explain the process and should be available to you throughout the abortion process if you have questions or concerns.
*Keep in mind that some providers require that their patients have a mailing address in the state where they are physically located or licensed to practice medicine. Some may require patients to be physically located in a certain state during a telehealth visit. Make sure to ask about the requirements.
